Frequently Asked EMS Questions

  • What is EMS training?
EMS stands for Electro Muscle Stimulation. In EMS training, the EMS suit (worn by the participant) sends electrical signals to all major muscle groups within the body that cause the muscles to contract in the same way that they do from exercise. EMS impulses mimic the impulses sent to muscles by the brain, but EMS impulses produce more efficient and complete muscle contractions than traditional exercise.
  • Why should I do EMS training?
EMS training provides the same muscle growth and strength enhancement benefits as other strength training regimens, but EMS requires only two, 20-minute sessions per week. At Embody EMS, we minimize the use of weights and other fitness accessories and let the EMS suit do the majority of the work. By minimizing weights and accessories, we provide a fitness solution that is easy on the joints and accessible to individuals with injuries or other ailments.
  • How long has EMS training been around?
EMS has a long history of use in physical therapy and rehabilitation and has recently gained popularity as a fitness training method in Europe and other parts of the world. EMS training is just beginning to gain popularity in the United States.
  • Is EMS safe?
Yes, EMS has been used for over 60 years and is scientifically proven to be safe. All of the EMS equipment used at Embody EMS Fitness has received FDA clearance.
  • Does EMS training hurt?
No. The electrical impulses sent to the muscles by the EMS suit may feel unusual at first, but most people become very comfortable with the sensation within a few minutes. Your trainer will monitor every aspect of your session and adjust the impulse intensity to your liking and needs. Most people claim that they feel better and much more energized after an EMS session than before the session started.
  • How long does an EMS workout last?
A typical EMS workout takes only 20 minutes and is usually followed by 5 minutes of “recovery or relaxation” stimulation.
  • How often should EMS training be done?
Because EMS training fully and efficiently stimulates all major muscle groups simultaneously, each 20-minute EMS session provides a very intense and complete full-body workout. Since the muscles need time to recover after every EMS session, EMS training is generally limited to just two, 20-minute workouts per week.
  • What should I wear to my EMS session?
All participants wear a base layer (shirt and shorts). Clients can arrive wearing their base layer, or can change into one at our studio. All multi-session packages (first package only) include one base layer set with the purchase price. Additional base layer sets are available for purchase. For 1st time EMS trial sessions, Embody EMS provides a base layer for use during the session at no charge. Beyond the base layer, all you need is a comfortable pair of workout shoes.
  • Will I be sore after my EMS session?
Like any effective workout, the muscles will be challenged. Most participants claim that they feel a good ‘soreness’, the type that generally follows a productive strength training workout. The good soreness usually becomes evident 1 to 2 days after the EMS session and can last a day or so.
  • Will I sweat?
Yes, most people can expect to sweat. Some people sweat a lot, and some don’t sweat much at all – it depends on the person and the intensity of the EMS settings during your session. Your muscles will be contracting and getting a vigorous workout even though you are not putting in much effort yourself. Your trainer will tailor your EMS sessions to your individual needs.
  • Who should refrain from EMS training?
There are several contraindicators for EMS training. Anyone with any of the following should not participate in EMS training: has a pacemaker, implanted defibrillator, or other implanted electronic device; is pregnant; has been diagnosed with epilepsy or another neurological disorder; has cancer; or is under the age of 18.
